The “Clap Out” Tradition—Why Goodbyes Matter

Lesson: Respect on the Way Out

Back when I worked at Apple Retail, we had a tradition: whenever someone left, the whole team would stop and give them a round of applause. It wasn’t just a “feel-good” moment; it created a culture of psychological safety. Apple respected people not only when they came onboard but also when they decided to move on.

Insight: Accept Change and Embrace Tours of Duty
  1. Growth Happens: People evolve, shift roles, or find new paths—that’s normal. Embracing this reality cultivates flexibility and productivity.
  2. Tours of Duty: If your goals no longer align with the company’s mission, treat your current role like a tour of duty—give it your all, then move on to something that fits you better.

When organizations celebrate departures as much as arrivals, they foster a positive culture that benefits both the company and employees in the long run.

Action Item: Build a Positive Exit Culture
  • Team Leaders: Next time someone leaves, consider creating a small ritual or gesture of appreciation.
  • Employees: If you’re on your way out, keep the experience positive. It sets the tone for long-term relationships and networking opportunities.
